Indonesia to probe arrest of 16 citizens in Turkey

Xinhua, March 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Indonesian government will probe the arrest of 16 of its citizens in Turkey, a minister said here on Thursday.

Indonesian Foreign minister Retno Marsudi made the announcement after meeting with President Joko Widodo at the State Palace.

President Widodo gave the order to investigate the case further and carry out coordination with relevant ministries to deepen the efforts to dig information on this matter, she said.

Meanwhile, communication with the authorities in Turkey would be intensified, she said.

The minister said according to reports, the 16 people who went on a tour to Turkey were arrested in the country on March 4 after arriving there on Feb. 24.

Indonesia's State Intelligence Agency (BIN) has been coordinating with Turkey's intelligence service on the possibility that they were attempting to join in the Islamic State (IS).

BIN chief Marciano Norman said further coordination with its Turkish counterpart is underway at the moment to seek confirmation of the IS recruiting.

The Indonesian government has banned the IS ideology from developing in the country. Endi
