The Indonesian government has rejected Australia's offer to pay the cost of life imprisonment for two drug convicts who are on death row should the execution of the two be canceled, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said here on Thursday.
Marsudi made the statement after her Australian counterpart Julie Bishop made the offer via a letter and phone call, requesting Indonesia not to execute Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. "The substance of the communication via telephone on March 3 and through a letter has been clear. I have conveyed that Indonesia's position on it (execution) is not changed,"Retno said at the State Palace.
Indonesia has frequently stated to move ahead with the execution plan for the two Australians, out of 10 foreign drug convicts, including inmates from Brazil, French, Nigeria and Indonesia, after recently losing their appeals for presidential clemency.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has declared to take stern punishment against drug offenders. Endi
