"I think Iran and Qatar can play important roles in the establishment of sustainable security in the region," he said in a joint press conference with his Qatari counterpart, Muhammad Bin Mubarak Bin Saleh Al Khalifi, on Wednesday.

Al Khalifi, for his part, highlighted the need to work togehter to restore peace in the region, Iran's Fars News Agency reported.

"I hope the good relations and contacts between Iran and Qatar continue to bring about flourishing ties in all fields to everyone's benefit," he said.

Larijani also stressed Iran's role in fighting the Islamic State militant group.
