Janette Garin appointed as acting health secretary of Philippine gov't

Xinhua, March 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Philippine President Aquino 3rd has appointed Acting Health Secretary Janette Garin in permanent capacity vice resigned secretary Enrique Ona, Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. announced on Thursday.

Coloma said the president has already signed the"nomination of Acting Secretary Janette L. Garin, as Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH)"and sent it to the Commission on Appointments. "She has been nominated for appointment as DOH secretary subject to CA confirmation,"he said, adding that it would be up to CA when to schedule the confirmation hearing.

Garin was serving as DOH undersecretary for Women, Children and Family Health Cluster before being appointed as acting secretary in November 2014.

She also served as a representative of Iloilo's First District, specifically from June 30, 2004 to June 30, 2013, prior to joining DOH.

The president said in January that he is inclined to make Garin' s appointment permanent as he was satisfied with her performance.

Garin, who replaced Ona who first went on leave in late October before eventually resigning due to alleged irregularities in DOH, was an ally of Aquino in the House and a co-author of the Reproductive Health Bill that the president advocated for.

Garin, who belongs to a political family in Iloilo, allied with the Liberal Party in the 2013 elections. She was married to Richard S. Garin, son of former Iloilo House of Representative Oscar Gemarino Garin. Endi
