The Lower House of Indian Parliament or Lok Sabha on Tuesday finally passed the landmark land acquisition bill despite stiff resistance from the opposition and some allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who call it anti-farmer, said local media.

The proposed legislation removed the need for obtaining the consent of landowners and carrying out Social Economic Assessment for acquiring land under certain categories, thus making it easier for government to obtain land.

The Right to Fair Compensation, Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2015, was passed after nine amendments were brought by the government.

The bill will now be taken up by the Rajya Sabha, or Upper House of Parliament, where the BJP government is in a minority.

The Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the Leftwing parties walked out before the voting took place. Endi
