Australian cyclone victims living in tents

Xinhua, March 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

More than 300 people in the remote northeast of Australia's Northern Territory will be living in tents for months to come following the recent Cyclone Lam, local press reported Monday.

The intense tropical storm hit the indigenous communities in Arnhem Land last month on the same day as Cyclone Marcia hit the far more populous region of Queensland's central coast.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday that people in the affected areas of the Northern Territory are expected to be living in tents for months, while others are camping in the remains of destroyed homes as the clean-up effort continues.

Local schools are due to re-open this week, it was reported.

The clean-up and rebuild are expected to cost more than 100 million Australian dollars (77 million U.S. dollars). Endi
