70 pct of Austrian women struggle with problems related to menopause: experts

Xinhua, March 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

In Austria, 70 percent of women struggle with mid-life health problems related to menopause, expert said on Wednesday.

Alongside common symptoms such as hot flashes, frequent depressive moods, joint pain, and high blood pressure can also occur. In addition the prescribing of medicines increases enormously during this phase of life, Gynaecology specialist Johannes Huber said at a press conference for the Menopause Society.

The use of anti-depressants is particularly noticeable, with 134,950 women in Austria under the age of 50 being treated with psychotropic drugs, compared to 253,967 women over 50 using them. In comparison with men, over the same age range this increases from 64,180 to 80,380.

The experts said herbal remedies can help with some symptoms associated with menopause, particularly those containing isoflavones such as soy and red clover.

Gynaecologist Doris Linsberger said lifestyle counselling can also be of benefit.

"There are women who can not cope with the new situation of menopause and can for example suffer from an altered sexuality."

She added these women need to be given advice, as women can go through the changes of menopause positively.

"For many new freedoms suddenly emerge," she said. Endit
