Vietnam's HCM City to host Int'l Open Chess Champs

The 5th HD Bank Cup International Open Chess Championship will be held here from March 16-23, with participation of 78 players from 12 countries and regions, announced the Vietnam Chess Federation (VCF) on its website on Wednesday.

Players will compete in a total of nine sets, following the official competition system of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Winners of the tournament will walk away with a total cash prize of 35,000 U.S. dollars, of which the best male player will receive 12,000 U.S. dollars while the best female player with 3,000 U.S. dollars.

According to organizers, Vietnam has two players selected as the Top seed and No. 2 seed at this year's tournament, including Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son.

Liem has 2,676 points and Son 2,659 points in FIDE Elo rating system. Son also is the reigning champion of the tournament.

In addition, Vietnam player Nguyen Anh Khoi, who won a gold medal in the under-12 boys' category at the World Youth Chess Championships in South Africa in Sept. 2014 will also compete in the event.

Other strong players from the world including Rakhmanov Aleksandr of Russia, Sadorra Julio Catalino and Gomez John Paul of the Philippines, as well as China's young and potential players such as Li Xueyi and Zhou Guijue will also feature the 5th HD Bank annual tournament.

Co-organized by VCF and HCM City Chess Association, and sponsored by the Vietnam HD Bank for consecutive five years, the event is the biggest international tournament of this kind to be held in Vietnam.

The World Chess Zone 3.3 Championship is also scheduled to be held here from March 6-16, aimed at getting rations for three players (two males, one female) to compete at the World Chess Championships this August in Bacu, Ajerbaizan, according to VCF. Endi
