Myanmar, Laos to enhance political, security cooperation

Xinhua, March 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar and Laos have vowed to enhance their political and security cooperation, a semi-official media reported Wednesday.

The two countries made the pledge at the 11th meeting of Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation held in Nay Pyi Taw.

The meeting, co-chaired by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and visiting Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest such as management of Myanmar-Laos Friendship Bridge, exchange of high-level visits, cooperation between the two foreign ministries, cooperation in transnational crime and drug control, the report said.

Myanmar and Laos are speeding up efforts in the construction of a friendship bridge across the Mekong River that links Myanmar's Tachileik in Shan state and Laungnamtha Province of Laos.

Upon targeted completion of the bridge by this year, the two countries are expected to see smooth and speedy road transportation and the bridge will contribute towards swift flow of commodities and better economic development.

The volume of trade between Myanmar and Laos is still low compared with other neighboring countries.

In January last year, Myanmar and Laos held their fourth ministerial meeting on prevention and control of drug abuse between the two countries, laying down plan for curbing illegal drug and chemical precursor smuggling in the border area as well as alternative development plan. Endi
