Bangladesh ferry accident toll rises to 76

Xinhua, February 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The death toll in Sunday's ferry disaster in Bangladesh's northwestern Manikganj district has risen to 76 with the recovery of seven more bodies, said a police official on Thursday.

"Locals picked up seven more decomposed bodies from accident site nearby areas, raising the death toll to 76 on Wednesday night, " said the official from Manikganj, 63 km northwest of capital Dhaka.

The ferry MV Mostafa capsized in Padma at around 12:00 p.m. local time Sunday after it was hit by a goods laden cargo tanker.

Police and rescue officials said about 50 people swam to shore and 30 others were rescued.

After nearly two days of relentless efforts, rescue divers managed to salvage the sunken ferry Monday afternoon. Endi
