Singapore's manufacturing output up 0.9 pct in January

Xinhua, February 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore's manufacturing output grew 0.9 percent in January year on year, pushed by expansions in biomedical manufacturing and precision engineering sectors, the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) said on Thursday.

Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster expanded 5.3 percent year-on-year in January, driven by medical technology segment, which increased 12.2 percent on account of strong demand for new medical devices, the EDB said.

The precision engineering cluster increased 4.1 percent year-on- year in January. The precision modules and components segment grew 9.7 percent due to higher production of metal precision components and optical instruments and photographic equipment. On the other hand, the machinery and systems segment fell 1.0 percent with lower output in mechanical engineering work and measuring devices.

The electronics cluster remained unchanged while output of the transport engineering cluster fell 2.2 percent. Within the transport engineering cluster, the land transport and marine and offshore engineering segments in fact recorded a growth of 24.4 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively. However, the growth was offset by the aerospace segment, which contracted 18.2 percent on account of low demand for repair jobs.

Manufacturing accounts for about one-fifth of Singapore's economy. Endi
