Nigerian president condemns bombings in northern states

Xinhua, February 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday condemned the multiple suicide bombings that have killed dozens between Monday and Tuesday in northern Yobe and Kano States.

The Nigerian leader said in a statement in Nigeria's economic hub of Lagos that Boko Haram's use of suicide bombing on soft targets in the wake of the ongoing rapid recovery by Nigerian troops and their multinational allies showed the sect was being defeated.

He added that the Boko Haram sect, suspected in the attacks, is facing extinction as a result of fierce bombardments by federal troops.

A suicide bomber on Monday detonated a bomb in northeastern city of Potiskum, and another on Tuesday. In northwest Kano State, another suicide bomber also struck on Tuesday.

Up to 50 persons have been killed and scores injured so far in the three attacks.

The group has in the past two months progressed from bombings, raids and kidnappings to trying to seize territory. Endite
