U.S. posts bounty for Russian man over cyber racketeering

Xinhua, February 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United States on Tuesday posted a bounty of 3 million dollars for information on a Russian man allegedly involved in a cyber racketeering enterprise.

The State Department offered the reward on Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev, who is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI) over his scheme that has resulted in the loss of over 100 million dollars from U.S. businesses and consumers.

Under the scheme, malicious software known as "Zeus" and " GameOver Zeus" was installed on more than one million computers, which enabled "contributors to the scheme to steal banking information and empty the compromised accounts," the department said in a statement.

Known online as "lucky12345" and "slavik," Bogachev is on the FBI's Cyber's Most Wanted list.

"He is believed to be at large in Russia," said the statement. "This reward offer reaffirms the commitment of the U.S. government to bring those who participate in organized crime to justice, whether they hide online or overseas." Endite
