Cote d'Ivoire's ex-first lady to appear in court second time

Xinhua, February 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cote d'Ivoire's ex-first lady Simon Gbagbo will appear in court on Monday next week, her lawyer Habiba Toure has said.

Ms. Gbagbo was arrested together with her husband, former president Laurent Gbagbo, in April 2011. She is facing charges of threatening state security and appeared in court for the first time in December last year.

Eighty pro-Gbagbo confidants were also accused of involvement in the 2010-2011 post-election violence.

Ms. Gbagbo is expected to appear in court alongside other accused persons.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against her for crimes against humanity committed during the post- election violence and asked Cote d'Ivoire to transfer her to the Hague.

However, Cote d'Ivoire has turned down the request, insisting that the country is able to prosecute her case.

"Cote d'Ivoire judicial departments are functioning perfectly," Minister of Justice Gnenema Coulibaly said. Endi
