France's Statistics Institute Bureau, Insee, announced on Thursday the consumer price index (CPI) fell by 1 percent in January from a month earlier, the lowest level since 2009.
On a yearly basis, the French inflation was down 0.4 percent.
"The main contributors to the fall of the consumer prices in January 2015, of manufactured product prices especially, were winter sales," Insee said.
Last month's decline in prices stemmed mostly from a 3.2 percent drop of prices of manufactured products due to winter sales which saw prices of clothes and footwear going down by 16.5 percent.
However, the decease was partly offset by a 0.9 percent rise of fresh food prices.
For the sixth consecutive month, costs of oil products deceased by 2.1 percent. Service prices, including transportation and tourism costs, inched down by 0.1 percent.
The Core-inflation (ISJ), in the meantime, was stable in January compared to December figures whereas the harmonized consumer price index (HCPI) went down by 1.1 percent, Insee data showed. Endit
