The government of Cote d'Ivoire Wednesday adopted a bill aimed at fighting against terrorism which has become more and more widespread in Africa, government spokesman Bruno Kone said.
"The bill aims to reinforce our counter-terrorism laws and guard our country against proliferation of terrorist groups as we have seen in recent years in the sub-region," Kone said.
The African continent continues to suffer from recurrent terrorist attacks carried out by groups such as the Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, Boko Haram in Nigeria and Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa operating in Mali.
The spokesman said the bill proposes severe punishment to guarantee the country's security, while also it respects people's rights and is in conformity with international laws guiding the fight against terrorism.
It proposes a prison sentence of between 10 to 20 years and a fine of 100,000 U.S. dollars for anyone found guilty of involvement in terrorism related activities.
The bill is waiting to be debated and passed by parliament. Endi
