The Turkish intelligence service has warned of attacks by Islamic State (IS) militants on foreign diplomatic missions in the country, local Hurriyet daily reported on Thursday.
IS militants could carry out armed or bombing attacks on diplomatic missions in Ankara and Istanbul of countries that are involved in the United States-led anti-IS coalition, the paper said, citing a circular issued two weeks ago by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT).
Some IS militants had fled to Turkey from the predominantly Kurdish city of Ayn al-Arab, also known as Kobane, in northern Syria, after fierce fighting there with Kurdish fighters and bombing by the U.S.-led coalition.
Some 3,000 IS militants from Syria and Iraq are currently in the region and reportedly plan to cross into Turkey, particularly to such cities as Hatay, Adana, Ankara and Istanbul, the paper said.
Some of the jihadists, including group leaders responsible for planning attacks, are already in Turkey, the paper said, quoting MIT information. Endit
