Major commercial websites in China have supported a campaign against online extortion and paid deletions.
Persons who are in charge of the content of 15 commercial websites such as sina.com, qq.com, ifeng.com and baidu.com vowed to improve internal regulations on publishing and withdrawing stories and help eliminate online extortion and paid deletions, at a conference held by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).
Zhu Xiaoguang, deputy editor-in-chief of sina.com, said sina will show zero tolerance of online extortion and paid deletions.
Those responsible at his company will be fired immediately and serious offenders will be reported to the police, Zhu said.
Zou Ming, editor-in-chief of ifeng.com, said the website will take lessons from the past when an employee was punished for paid deletions.
The CAC, together with the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the ministries of public security, and industry and information technology, launched the campaign on Jan. 21. Endi
