Austria's population increased by nearly 72,000 or 0.8 percent year on year to 8,579,747 by Jan. 1, 2015, according to official statistics released Wednesday.
The growth rate was significantly higher than that of one year earlier, when about 56,000 more people began to reside permanently in the central European country in 2013, said Statistics Austria in a report.
The majority or 55.1 percent of the past year's increase occurred in the eastern part of the country, particularly in the capital of Vienna which saw around 28,000 more people in its residents. For more than 10 years, the city has kept a trend of having the strongest population growth in the country.
Other cities with strong population growth include Innsbruck, Linz and Wiener Neustadt, each of which saw an increase of 1.8 percent.
The new figures show that population increases primarily took place in urban areas and regions along main roads, with declines recorded in some peripheral areas. Endi
