EU praises Mozambican independent media for impartial coverage

Xinhua, February 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union observation mission praised in its report launched in Maputo on Wednesday the independent media group SOICO for its balanced coverage of the general elections held in Mozambique last October.

"This is a result of preparation, commitment of the group in delivering an impartial coverage of the elections to the people, a commitment we are happy to keep and also satisfied for the recognition," said Soico senior member, Olivia Massango, on Wednesday.

The report appoints the television STV and the daily newspaper O Pais as the ones with the best impartial coverage compared to other media companies such as the Public Television TVM and the largest News Paper Noticias.

The television STV had 41 percent of its antenna to the presidential candidate Filipe Nyusi, 32 percent to the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) candidate, Daviz Simango and 27 percent to the leader of the main opposition party Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama, taking into consideration that the last one started his campaign two weeks later compared to the other candidates.

As for the political party, the independent television dedicated 37 percent of its coverage to the ruling Frelimo party, 33 percent of its time to the main opposition party Renamo and 28 percent to MDM. Endi
