On-going battles in eastern Ukraine clear violation of Minsk agreement: Mogherini

Xinhua, February 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

On-going battles at the town of Debatseve, a key railway hub in eastern Ukraine, are a clear violation of the Minsk ceasefire agreement, EU High Representative for External Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said here on Wednesday.

The EU high representative, who is visiting Latvia for an informal meeting of EU defense ministers, voiced concerns about the latest escalation in eastern Ukraine.

"Last night's events in Debaltseve are a clear violation of the Minsk ceasefire agreement. Not only the EU, but the whole international community supports the resolution passed on Tuesday by the UN Security Council and calls for full compliance with the points of the Minsk agreement," Mogherini said.

Mogherini also thanked Latvia as the current EU presidency for paying so much attention to security issues.

The informal meeting of EU defense ministers is taking place in Riga this Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting focuses on preparations for the European Council's upcoming meeting, which will be dedicated to Europe's defense issues. Endit
