Republic of Congo's Labor and Social Safety Minister Florent Ntsiba on Monday urged all African countries to ratify the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC, 2006).
Speaking in Brazzaville during a workshop on implementation of the Maritime Labor Convention, organized in partnership with the International Labor Office (ILO), Ntsiba explained that the convention will promote better working, housing, entertainment, food and health conditions.
The MLC 2006 contains, in one judicial instrument, 37 conventions and recommendations of the International Labor Organization, covering all aspects of working and living conditions for all seafarers.
The minister particularly urged member states of the regional body, Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), to come up with an observatory for the rights of seafarers.
The observatory would promote maritime employment through establishment of regulations and policy frameworks that guarantee fairness in creation and preservation of jobs as well as defense of fundamental human rights."
The four day workshop brings together experts from ILO and ECCAS member states that include Republic of Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic, Chad, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Endi
