Pakistani army chief in Kabul for security talks: military

Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistani army chief General Raheel Sharif arrived in Kabul on Tuesday on a day-long visit for talks on security issues amid warm military-to-military relations, the military said.

The army chief will meet senior military and political leaders, the military said in a statement. Director General of Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Rizwan Akhtar is accompanying the army chief.

It is the second visit of General Raheel Sharif to Kabul in around two months. He had visited Afghanistan a day after the Taliban attacked an army school in the northwestern city of Peshawar and killed 140 children and 10 staff members on Dec. 16.

An army spokesman said the army chief had shared some "vital intelligence" with the Afghan authorities about the attack on the Army Public School.

Afghan authorities have arrested six people in connection with the attack and Pakistan wants their handover.

Pakistani Taliban had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The army spokesman, Maj Gen. Asim Bajwa, said that a group of 27 militants were involved in the attack and most of them have either been killed in direct military actions or arrested.

Some security sources say General Reheel Sharif is likely to formally seek handover of the school attack's suspects. Endi
