Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hong Kong's population has increased 42,300 or 0.6 percent to 7,264,100 at the end of 2014 from 7,221,800 at the end of 2013, according to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Tuesday.

Obtained by subtracting the number of deaths from the number of births, the natural increase of the population from end-2013 to end-2014 amounted to 17,500. During the same period, there was a net movement of 24,800 Hong Kong residents, said the government.

Births and inflow of One-way Permit holders (OWPHs) were important constituents of the overall population increase. The number of births from end-2013 to end-2014 was 62,300 and the inflow of OWPHs was 40,500.

Deaths during the period, at 44,800, offset part of the increase. If OWPHs were excluded, there was a net outflow of 15, 700 persons.

The Hong Kong population is measured on the definition of resident population, which comprises usual residents and mobile residents. Among the total population at the end of 2014, 7,039, 100 were usual residents and 225,000 were mobile residents. Endi
