The special envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General in the Great Lakes Region Said Djinnit on Monday reiterated the institution's commitment to support Burundi's electoral process.
"UN's sole objective is to help this country, as it has done to other countries in the region, to create conditions for an election that will enable Burundi to progress, reinforce democracy and stability in a peaceful, transparent and democratic environment," Djinnit said after a meeting in Bujumbura with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.
He said the president briefed him on the ongoing preparations by the government to ensure a peaceful environment during the elections.
Djinnit further said the good relations between Burundi's institutions with the UN Electoral Mission in Burundi.
Burundi is scheduled to hold communal and legislative elections on May 26 followed by presidential elections on June 26 and senatorial elections on Aug. 24.
One unique point of Burundi's 2015 elections is that the process will be monitored by UN electoral observers in conformity with a resolution of the Security Council. Endi
