Beer consumption in Portugal hits record low

Xinhua, February 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portuguese beer consumption hit a record low in 2014, daily newspaper Publico reported on Friday.

According to the Portuguese Association of Beer Producers, beer consumption has reached its lowest level in 24 years.

The Portuguese drank an average of 46 liters of beer in 2014, compared to 61 liters 12 years ago.

These results are due to not so warm summer last year, while tourism contributed to the consumption of beer in the catering industry.

Sales of beer in hotels, cafes and restaurants rose from 63 percent to 64 percent.

The Portuguese Association of Beer Producers recently announced it is planning a formal complaint to the European Commission due to "fiscal discrimination" faced by the beer sector.

Portugal's VAT on beer is 23 percent, while VAT on wine is 13 percent. The beer sector also has an excise duty of 3 percent. Enditem
