UN chief condemns attack on Shia mosque in Pakistan's Peshawar

Xinhua, February 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday condemned the attack on a Shia mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, which killed at least 19 people.

In a press statement released by Ban's spokesperson, Ban said he is deeply dismayed by such repeated targeting of innocent people on account of their religious beliefs and in their places of worship.

"There is no justification for such crimes," said the statement.

At least 19 people were killed and over 40 others injured in a twin suicide attack at a mosque of Shia Muslims in Pakistan's northwestern provincial capital of Peshawar at 1:35 p.m. local time.

It is the second suicide attack at the Shia Muslims in Pakistan during the last two weeks. On Jan. 30, at least 62 people were killed and more than 60 others injured when a suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque during a Friday prayer in the country's southern district of Shikarpur.

Ban also called on the Pakistani authorities to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrators and urges them to redouble their efforts to protect religious and ethnic minorities and to combat terrorism in all its forms. Endite
