UNDP chief to visit Ebola hit countries

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Administrator, Helen Clark, will pay an official visit to the three countries most affected by the Ebola virus.

The UN official will visit Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone from Feb. 11 to 18, to affirm the UN's continued commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis, and support for the recovery process, according to an official statement released Thursday.

During her visit in Liberia which runs from Feb. 13 to 16, the UN official will hold discussions with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the UN Family, the Ebola Incident Management System and the donor community.

Clark is expected to participate in a signing ceremony of a Social Safety Net Cash Transfer Program between UNDP and the Government of Liberia through the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Internal Affairs, scheduled to take place in the country's Bomi County.

The socio-economic impact of Ebola disease will last long after the disease has been brought under control, which has affected the means of making a living of millions of the poorest and most vulnerable people in these countries, the UN statement said.

It said the crisis has also fueled stigmatization and brought about further social and economic hardship on the people in the hard hit countries.

In response to the governments' expressed need to begin laying the foundations for recovery alongside the ongoing response to the disease, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has tasked UNDP with leading the UN system on Ebola-related recovery.

UNDP is working with the national authorities as well as local, regional and international partners on an Ebola Recovery Assessment, the statement said. Endi
