Cargo vessel runs aground off Andros island, rescue operation underway

Xinhua, February 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel run aground off Andros island on Wednesday and a rescue operation was underway to evacuate the 22 crew members, the Greek Coast Guard said.

So far, 18 crewmen of the "GOOD FAITH" have been transferred to safety by coast guards, aided by three tug boats and two helicopters, according to local authorities.

Gale force winds on the Aegean Sea led the freighter, which was empty of cargo, to run aground as Greece was gripped by a cold front with intense snowfall and strong winds.

The cargo ship had left Elefsina port near Athens and was en route to Ukraine, according to Coast Guard officials. Endite
