Heavy snow causes traffic trouble in Austria

Xinhua, February 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Heavy snowfall accompanied by strong winds caused widespread disruptions in road, rail and air traffic across Austria Monday, particularly in the national capital Vienna.

Some roads in Vienna were entirely cut off and the public transport also saw lengthy delays, while all runways except one at the Vienna International Airport were closed.

"We have announced full snow alert," said Wiener Linien, spokesperson for the public transport operator for Vienna. Some 250 people were cleaning snow at bus stops and entrances to subway stations, while 1,300 workers and snow-cleaning vehicles were deployed citywide in response to the snowstorm.

Operator of the national rail system, the Austrian Federal Railways, also reported difficulty in dealing with the harsh weather conditions, with lengthy delays of between 30 and 90 minutes particularly in Vienna, with all available staff and equipment working to keep the train system running.

Elsewhere in the country similar problems were reported, such as poor road conditions and closures in some areas for heavy vehicles, and warnings of heightened avalanche danger particularly in the mountain regions of Lower Austria, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol. Endi
