Portugal to invest 40 mln euros in cancer treatment

The Portuguese government will invest 40 million euros this year to support treatment for cancer patients, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Wednesday, the World Cancer Day.

The funds will help patients at the Institutes of Portuguese Oncology in the capital Lisbon and the northern cities of Porto and Braga.

"A part of this investment will be made thanks to the units of self-financing capacity... another, thanks to EC funding, and another part thanks to the injection by the state of up to 20 million euros to be carried out this year," the statement said.

The Ministry of Health pointed out that the illness was the main cause of premature death before the age of 70 and was the second cause of death in all age groups after cardiovascular diseases.

President of Portugal's Anti-Cancer League Francisco Cavaleiro Ferreira said he was "satisfied" with the government's funding on Wednesday, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa, but pointed out that funds were never sufficient.

"The funds are never sufficient for the fight against cancer, but it is really good to know that there is an additional investment of 40 million euros. We see that with a lot of satisfaction," he added. Enditem
