UN Security Council demands investigation of Spanish peacekeeper's death in Lebanon

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Wednesday urged to carry out a full, comprehensive investigation so as to determine the facts of a Spanish peacekeeper's death in southern Lebanon last week.

The demand was disclosed to reporters by Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, in a statement after UN Security Council's consultation was held Wednesday. China assumes rotating presidency of the council this month.

Last Wednesday, UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observed a Hezbollah attack on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the UNIFIL area of operations, and then IDF retaliated, during which a UNIFIL peacekeeper from Spain deployed at a UN position near Ghajar sustained serious injuries. The peacekeeper later died of the injuries.

Members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the killing of the UNIFIL Spanish peacekeeper which occurred amid fire exchanges on Jan. 28, according to Liu.

UNIFIL has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978. Endite
