Militants killed 13 soldiers and injured 8 others in an attack on al-Mabruk oil field in southeastern Libya, security sources said on Wednesday.

"Four soldiers were killed in an ambush in al-Mabruk oil field southeast the city of Sirte while they were on their way to help the guards in the field," the spokesperson for the local guards Hakim Mazab al-Zwai said.

"When the soldiers arrived, the gunmen had already controlled the field after they killed four guards, three Filipinos, and two Ghanaians. The deathtoll is thirteen." al-Zwai added.

On Tuesday night, extremist militants started the attack on al-Mabruk oil field (170 km southeast the city of Sirte). The state-run National Oil Corporation (NOC) also confirmed the attack in an statement.

"Workers were evacuated out of the field and reached Sirte unharmed," the statement said.

The operation in al-Mabruk oil field has been suspended at the end of last year. Only a few number of personnels were present in the field.

Mohammed al-Hrari, official spokesman for NOC told Xinhua that none of the field's workers has been kidnapped during the attack. Endit
