Israeli PM warns against threat from Iran

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Iran is trying to open a front against Israel along its border with Syria.

Netanyahu visited earlier in the day an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base near Mount Hermon along with Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon.

"I came here today with our defense minister to view the IDF preparations against the new front, terror front, that Iran is seeking to establish here in the Golan Heights," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu also addressed the execution of Jordanian pilot by the Islamic State, and compared it to the Islamic Republic.

"I wish to send my condolences to King Abdullah (of Jordan) and the Jordanian people in wake of the horrific murder of their Jordanian air force pilot," said Netanyahu.

He also said that Israel would oppose a potential deal that the P5+1 countries are "racing to forge" with Iran, which is "dangerous to the region and the world."

Netanyahu is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Congress in favor of imposing more sanctions against Iran, causing tensions with U.S. President Barack Obama, who is against imposing further sanctions at this time.

Israel's northern borders, that were relatively quiet in recent years, were shaken last week with two attacks from Syria and Southern Lebanon.

Last Tuesday, four rockets were launched from Syria to the Israeli Golan Heights territories, lands Israel annexed in the 1967 Mideast War. No injuries or damages were reported.

On the following day, Hezbollah militants launched anti-tank missiles at an Israeli military vehicle, killing two soldiers and wounding seven.

The two attacks arrived a week after an alleged Israeli airstrike killed a Hezbollah commander and an Iranian general, along with other Hezbollah and Iranian operatives. Endit
