A Greek oil tanker came under attack by pirates off the coasts of Nigeria and Cameroon which resulted in the death of a Greek officer and the abduction of three crew members, the Greek Coast Guard said on Wednesday.

The Malta-flagged "Kalamos" had sailed from China for Nigeria and was not loaded during the attack, according to the Greek Shipping Ministry. The tanker was chartered by an Indian refiner, according to initial information.

The deputy commander was fatally wounded during the armed attack which occurred while the tanker was about to be loaded with new cargo from a nearby oil terminal. The pirates fled with three hostages: two Greeks and a foreign national.

It has not been clarified whether crew members were injured.

"Kalamos" had a 23-person strong crew, among them ten Greeks, according to the Greek Coast Guard. Endit
