Cezanne's painting sells for 13.5 mln pounds in London

One of the renowned French post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne's paintings was sold for more than 13.5 million pounds (20.3 million U.S. dollars) in Christie's auction in London on Wednesday evening.

Vue sur L'Estaque et le Chateau d'If, painted by Cezanne around 1883 to 1885, is rare to see. It has not been seen on the market since it was acquired in November 1936 by Samuel Courtauld, founder of the famous Courtauld Gallery and Institute of Art, London, until Wednesday's Impressionist/Modern Evening Sale in London Christie's.

It said Cezanne moved his family away from Paris in the wake of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war, and lived in the fishing port and small seaside resort of L'Estauqe in Marseille.

In 1886, Cezanne moved to the Cezanne family mansion, which was less than 20 miles away, and the masterpiece was painted on one of the last visits Cezanne made to L'Estaque.

The canvas depicted the landscape of L'Estaque with trees on the hilltop, red roof buildings in the town, blue sea and islands in the distance. It represented an important period in his mature work.

It was estimated between eight and twelve million pounds (12 to 18 million U.S. dollars) by Christie's. Enditem
