5 killed in car bombing in southern Yemen

Xinhua, February 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

A car bomb exploded Wednesday evening at a military base in Yemen's southern province of al-Bayda, killing five soldiers and injuring several others, a government official told Xinhua.

The booby-trapped car exploded at the main gate of the 26th Armored Brigade stationed in al-Swadia district in al-Bayda province. Five soldiers were killed, while several others were wounded, a local government official said on condition of anonymity.

A medical official in the province told Xinhua that "12 wounded troopers were transferred to a nearby medical center for treatment."

Police sources said that "special security units moved to the bombing site immediately" and they will look into the identities of the attackers.

The sources blamed gunmen of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) for the latest suicide attacks.

AQAP, which emerged in January 2009 and also known locally as Ansar al-Sharia, is considered one of the greatest threats to the Yemeni government and neighboring oil-rich Saudi Arabia. Endit
