Spain's second biggest bank, BBVA, earned 2.618 billion euros (2.99 billion U.S. dollars) in 2014, registering a year-on-year increase of 25.7 percent, the bank reported on Wednesday.

The bank earned 1.028 billion euros in Spain in 2014, more than doubled the figure of the previous year, while its loans increased by 0.3 percent in the country from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, reaching 169.211 billion euros.

BBVA obtained an attributable profit of 428 million euros in the United States last year, which meant an 8.9 percent increase when compared with a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the bank's attributable profit in Turkey and its biggest market Mexico reached 565 million euros and 1.915 billion euros respectively in 2014.

BBVA Chairman Francisco Gonzalez said the bank would sell its remaining 4.7 percent stake in China's CITIC Bank when the market conditions were right. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars) Endit
