Nigeria sets up special team to investigate electoral offences

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian police on Wednesday said it has set up a special team to investigate offences emanating from elections, as the West African country prepares for a national poll next week.

Police authorities said the special investigative team, headed by the commissioner of police in charge of the force legal/ prosecution department, was set up to basically reiterate the security agency's preparation and readiness to ensure free, fair, credible and violence-free elections as well as adequate security of lives and property before, during and after the elections.

"The force, therefore, enjoins politicians, stakeholders and other political actors to play the game according to the rule," the local police said via a statement signed by its national spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

Nigeria's general election will kick off next week, starting with the presidential and national assembly polls on Feb. 14. Two weeks later, the state governorship and congress elections will follow.

The Nigerian police had earlier warned political parties and their followers to refrain from heating up the polity and eschew violence before, during and after the polls. Endi
