French art space to open 1st Asian gallery in Hong Kong

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

French art photography gallery La Galerie will open its first Asian gallery in Hong Kong on Thursday, with the debut exhibition to feature some of Picasso's original photographs and prints, it said here on Wednesday.

Co-founder Marie-Florence Gros said Asia's art market has been booming over the past decade and many international galleries have already established a presence in Hong Kong.

"We did not want to miss the opportunity and we found that there were not many galleries specialized in art photography in Hong Kong," she said.

Cyril Delettre, also a co-founder of the gallery, said that Hong Kong is right in the heart of the Asian art scene.

This is one reason why they decided to base La Galerie here and will have all their operations, including sourcing, marketing and retail, done from here, he said.

Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion in Hong Kong Andrew Davis said Hong Kong provides great access to a large number of high net worth individuals in Asia-Pacific, which has added to the buoyancy of Hong Kong's art market.

Together with Hong Kong's well-established transport and logistics networks, world-class business infrastructure and deep pool of art talent, it is the ideal place to start a business in art, he said. Endi
