Britain offers 5 mln USD to improve roads in Kenyan port city

The British government on Wednesday inked a grant agreement for an additional 5 million U.S. dollars for the construction of access roads between the Moi International Airport and Mombasa Port in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa.

The funds, which was channeled by Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) to TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) for its Mombasa Port Program, will be used to upgrade the 5.3 km Port Reitz/Airport road into a dual carriage way.

With this support, the UKAid's support stands at 55 million dollars, Head of DFID Kenya Lisa Phillips said during the signing ceremony in Mombasa.

The 15-month project is set to start from April to June in 2016, which includes widening of the existing access roads to seven meters on each side and improving traffic intersection and traffic lights installation.

TMEA said the upgrade is expected to take up to 30 percent of traffic from the Kipevu West container terminal, reducing port access time, which will also accommodate about 30 percent of the traffic from the existing terminal.

The Port of Mombasa has over the years recorded significant growth in traffic volumes. In the last 10 years, traffic increased more than 6 percent per annum to 22.3 million tons in 2013. Endi
