Nigeria's advisory council to meet ahead of crucial polls

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's Council of State is expected to meet on Thursday in Abuja to discuss calls for the postponement of this month's general elections and other crucial matters.

The meeting which is to be chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan is to also review the preparations for the elections by Independent National Electoral Commission and the relevant security agencies.

Some proponents of the polls' postponement had hinged it on the inability of the electoral body to distribute enough Permanent Voter Cards to registered voters.

The call is widely believed to be engineered by the Presidency, which though had denied the charge.

However, the electoral body insisted that there would be no postponement of the elections.

Composed of the country's president as the chairman and the vice-president as the deputy chairman, the council includes members such as former presidents, heads of state and all former chief justices of Nigeria.

The Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all incumbent state governors and the Attorney General of Federation are also its members. Endi
