EU announces new support for Kiribati

Xinhua, February 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The EU will provide new support worth 23 million euros (26 million U.S. dollars) for Kiribati, an increase of 80 percent from between 2008 and 2013, announced European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica on Tuesday.

The new funding will be spent on the socio-economic development of Kiritimati Island, which holds 70 percent of the island country's land surface but was virtually uninhabited for a long time.

The EU hopes the funding will help improve economic opportunities and livelihoods in Kiribati by developing Kiritimati. The aim is to alleviate growing climate change threats affecting the main island Tarawa as well as poverty.

The EU is providing support for Kiribati through thematic funding in selected areas such as renewable energy, water and sanitation, as well as regional support and a fisheries partnership agreement.

Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean comprising 33 atolls and reef islands with a permanent population of just over 100,000 people. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars) Endit
