Indonesia, Japan to sign MoU on defense cooperation: envoy

Xinhua, February 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indonesia and Japan will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation in the near future, allowing Indonesia to import armaments and defense instruments from Japan, Indonesian envoy to Japan Yusron Ihza Mahendra said here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a coordination meeting at the foreign affairs ministry, Yusron said that the MoU would also pave way for Indonesian defense-related industry to establish cooperation with their counterparts in Japan.

"This would be a huge opportunity. For instance, Indonesian plane maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) may establish joint cooperation in research, production and capital. Cooperation in the defense sector would have a very good atmosphere," Yusron said.

Yusron did not mention the exact schedule for the signing, only hinted that President Joko Widodo may have schedule to visit Japan in March this year.

The Japanese government has eased its stance on its defense equipment transfer principles in April last year, allowing arms exports under certain circumstances. Endi
