UN reiterates concerns over Lebanon's security and stability

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag expressed Thursday Lebanon's commitment to the UN Security Council resolution 1701, reiterating the UN concerns over Lebanon's security and stability.

According to the National News Agency, Kaag said following her meeting with Prime Minister Tammam Salam "I expressed my appreciation for the Prime Minister's clearly expressed commitment to Security Council resolution 1701 and the importance of safeguarding Lebanon's security and stability."

She added "I reiterated the UN Secretary General's deep concern over the security situation and the violations of resolution 1701."

The UN diplomat stressed "the UN continues to provide its good offices and calls on all parties to continue to exercise caution and restraint to avoid any action which could destabilize the situation. We also honored the fallen UNIFIL peacekeeper."

Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militant party, launched Wednesday an attack on an Israeli convoy in the occupied Shebaa Farms, which led to the killing of two Israeli soldiers and the injury of six others.

The party claimed responsibility for the attack which came in light of Israel's killing in the Qoneitra region of Syria six Hezbollah commanders and a highly ranked Iranian officer.

Israel, in response to Wednesday's attack, shelled south Lebanon with more than 200 mortar shells which led to the killing of a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Spanish peacekeeper. Endit
