Nigeria gives relief materials to Nigerian refugees in Niger

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria has given 540 tons of relief materials to Nigerian refugees taking shelter in neighboring Niger, the National Emergency Management Agency said via a statement on Thursday.

The relief items, which included food and non-food items, were delivered to the refugees who fled Nigeria due to attacks in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe -- the three most-hit states by the insurgency of Boko Haram in northeastern region of Africa's most populous country.

Many of the refugees live in different locations in the Diffa region of Niger Republic, the state-run agency said. "The Nigerian government will also continue to liaise with the government of Niger to ensure that all Nigerian refugees live in better condition. Nigeria is committed to providing succor to its citizens who are in distress," the statement added.

The Nigerian emergency agency said similar relief items will be provided to Nigerian refugees in Chad and Cameroon, while expressing gratitude to the government of Niger for hosting and providing the refugees with protection.

Nigeria also commended the UN agencies and international non- governmental organizations for sheltering, feeding and providing facilities at the camps.

The Diffa region in Niger Republic is about 25 km to Yobe and Borno states in northern Nigeria, making it convenient for Nigerians to cross over to seek refuge there. Endi
