Xinhua, January 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union (EU) was expected to have reached a new peak of around 2.7 billion nights in 2014, according to a press release by the EU statistical office Eurostat on Thursday.

The number grew by 1.7 percent compared with 2013, and the nights spent by non-residents accounted for 44 percent.

In 2014, France and Spain continued to be the top two Member States in terms of tourism nights, followed by Italy and Germany.

The number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in 2014 grew in the majority of Member States, with the largest increases being observed in Latvia, Belgium, Portugal and Greece.

According to Eurostat, following the decline observed in 2009 with the beginning of the financial crisis, there had been a steady increase in the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU over the last 5 years. Endit
