Maternal nutrition affects offspring's physical performance

The mother's diet can influence the physical performance of the offspring, said the German Institute of Human Nutrition(DIfE) on Thursday.
As a study with mice showed, the offspring of mothers who received high-fat food during the period of lactation, perform despite running training less than the animals whose mothers followed a low-fat diet.
The study indicates that the muscles of these animals have poor energy during prolonged activity, and that the poor performance could increase the risk of obesity with age.
According to the World Health Organization, the number of morbidly obese people worldwide has doubled since 1980, with various factors contributing to the development of obesity.
"With our study, we demonstrate for the first time that the maternal consumption of a high fat diet during pregnancy and lactation affects the muscular performance and trainability of the offspring, even if the mothers are not overweight," said Susanne Klaus, the head of the Working Group physiology of energy metabolism at DifE.
