Two Armenian soldiers killed in new border clash with Azerbaijan

Xinhua, January 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Azerbaijani forces on Friday killed two Armenian soldiers in a border clash as part of the latest conflict between the two countries over the disputed region of Nagorny Karabakh, the Armenian Defense Ministry said.

The clash occurred early Friday at the Berd region in Tavush province, said Artzrun Hovhannisyan, a spokesman for the ministry, adding that the fighting lasted half an hour.

"The rival was thrown back with casualties. But we had two casualties -- Lieut. Karen Galstyan and Private Artak Sargsyan were killed," he said.

Armenia is locked in a decades-long conflict with Azerbaijan over Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan.

Clashes between the two countries' troops intensified this month following an unprecedented spiral of violence last year.

Since the beginning of 2015, Armenia has lost about 10 soldiers in clashes with Azerbaijan. Endi
