Lebanese army dismantles booby-trapped car in border town

Xinhua, January 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Lebanese army said Thursday that its units dismantled a booby-trapped car they discovered at the entrance of the eastern border town of Arsal.

The Guidance Directorate said in a statement "a vehicle rigged with explosives was discovered at the entrance of the northeastern border town of Arsal. A military expert soon arrived at the scene and defused the bomb."

"The Army Intelligence discovered the black Kia vehicle, which was parked near a military post in the Ain al-Shaab region," it added, pointing that "around 25 kilograms of explosives were found in the car that did not have license plates."

On Sep. 11, the army dismantled a booby-trapped car containing 100 kilograms of explosives in the same region and on Jan. 15, it seized a booby-trapped car containing around 120 kilograms of explosives also in Arsal.

The outskirts of Arsal have been witnessing clashes between the army and Syria-based jihadist groups since last August when Jihadists from al-Qaeda linked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State (IS) stormed the town and engaged in deadly battles with the army. Endit
